Royal spirit vs Thomian grit enacted on water
Traditional foes in schools sports, Royal College Colombo and S. Thomas’ College Mt. Lavinia will meet again in another discipline, this time on the waters of Beira Lake next Saturday. This will be for the 44th annual Boat Race — better known as the 41st Royal-Thomian Regatta.
Regarded as the most prestigious boat race in Sri Lanka, the race is rowed for the Royal-Thomian Boat Race Trophy. The overall winner of the regatta will receive the T. Noel Fernando Memorial Trophy. The traditional regatta currently comprises of 11 races – including sculls, pairs and fours. Out of the 40 regattas rowed, S. Thomas’ has recorded 19 wins while Royal College has won 15. Five regattas ended in as draws, while in 2006 the event was not held. The races are rowed over a distance of 1000 yards on the waters of Beira overlooking the Colombo Rowing Club.
