Private security companies in Sri Lanka are important stakeholders and an integral element in the ongoing nation building exercise and as such the CEO’s of these organisations bear a vital role of accountability and responsibility in reaching the country’s development goals, according to President SLASSPA (Sri Lanka Security Service Providers Association) Major Tissa Aluwihare.

He was speaking at the first ever CEO forum held under the auspices of the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development (Civil Security) in Colombo this week. It was attended by over 200 security companies, according to a media release issued by the association.

Major Aluwihare said this awareness programme is timely as it would help steer leaders of the industry towards the goal of total professionalism in service and to make use of the growing opportunities now being created for the trade.

“Companies should strive to conform to ethical norms by paying the guards the minimum wage or above, and meeting their statutory dues such as EPF, ETF, etc,” he added.

Ms. Damayanthi Jayaratne, additional Secretary, (Civil Security) Ministry of Defence and Urban Development and Competent Authority on Private Security agencies, in her keynote address said that there are new vistas of employment opening up for security officers through the vast number of infrastructure projects and the large scale reclamation of lands in around Colombo for development projects.
