Cosmos HC veterans from Melbourne arrive
View(s):The veteran Cosmos Hockey Club from Melbourne, Australia arrived in the island for a short tour where they will play two matches one in Kandy and the other at the Astro turf in Colombo and an exhibition game at the Padang (Malay CC) in Colombo.
According to sources the Cosmos HC was first known as the Springvale Noble Park HC when it was in the early 70’s and later changed its name to Greater Dandenong Warriors HC.The club consists of three veteran reams, four senior teams, two women’s teams and four junior teams between the age group of 10 to 16 years (boys and girls). In the year 2009 the veterans team comprising of Anglo Indians, Sri Lankans, New Zealanders and Italians played matches against other state teams within Australia.
The matches ended with success which prompted the Cosmos HC of touring overseas with the first tour being t o Singapore. From the three matches were played the Cosmos HC had fluctuated fortunes with a win, loss and a draw.
In the year 2010 the Cosmos HC embarked on their second tour to New Zealand and played two matches against their veterans known as “Black Sticks” where they lost both games they played.
Their third overseas tour was to Kolkata, India in 2013 where they played three matches and had mixed success with a win, loss and a draw. The team comprises of players over the age of 45 years.
The brief tour to Sri Lanka was organised by Mohan Selvaratnam a former Wesley and Malay CC hockey player. The matches they are down to play are October 26 vs Kandy Veterans Hockey Team at the University grounds in Peradeniya, October 31 – Exhibition match against Malay CC at Padang and November 1 vs CH and FC Veterans at Astro Turf.The visiting Cosmos HC veterans team will also be donating hockey equipments and cash for the upliftment of hockey at Malay CC. – MSA
