Lankan lasses do well at FIBA U18 Cager tourney
View(s):The Sri Lanka Under-18 Girls’ basketball team performed creditably with three wins at the 22nd FIBA Asia Under-18 Championship for Women held in Jordan. With the success Sri Lanka’s hopes of competing in the Level I segment of the tournament will now become a reality according to the team management.
The Sri Lanka lasses, after facing five encounters won three and lost two, against much better opponents Malaysia and Hong Kong. Sri Lanka beat Kazakhstan 70-61 in their opening game and continued the top form with a comprehensive 70-44 win against Kyrgyzstan. Despite coming out with impressive performances they lost to Malaysia (58-50) and against Hong Kong (42-33) after keenly contested games. However their most impressive performance came against hosts Jordan when the Sri Lankans ran amok to record a remarkable 54-24 win.
“The wins show that Sri Lankan girls can get better only if they are given enough experience and exposure, our target was a top-two finish in Level II and take a shot at the Level I team in the Qualifying Games. With this record, we think the girls have shown that our target is now realistic,” team officials stressed.
