Nimesh and Natasha take top honours
Royalist Nimesh Ranchagoda and Visakhian Natasha Sandavinee took top honours at the fifth Western Province Open Ranking Table Tennis Championship 2014 held at the S. Thomas’ College Indoor Complex in Mt. Lavinia conducted by I & D Table Tennis Academy.
Nimesh bagged the Boy’s Under-18 and Under-15 Singles titles while Natasha achieved the same double feat in the Girls’ segment. The tournament was held on October 18 and 19.
Kulanaka Handehewa of Royal College was another paddler who impressed during the two-day competition. He finished second best to Open Men’s Singles champion Sahanaka Ganegoda of Dialog Axiata but teamed up with schoolmate Osura Nawagamuwa to bag the Open Men’s Doubles championship. Yahani Mendis of Girls’ High School Mt. Lavinia beat schoolmate Sachini Alwis of Girls’ High School Mt. Lavinia, to claim the Open Women’s Singles title. Visakha Vidyalaya duo Chamathsara Fernando and Hansani Kapugeekiyana took the better of Githmi de Silva of I&D TT Academy and Sachini Alwis of Girls’ High School Mt. Lavinia to bag the Open Women’s Doubles championship.
On both occasions Nimesh Ranchagoda had the opportunity of beating his team mate Virunika Hendehewa as he went on to win the Boy’s Under-18 and Under-15 Singles championships. But Natasha Sandavinee of Visakha met two different opponents on her way to the Girls’ Under-18 and Under-15 Singles crowns. She met Senuri de Silva of Holy Family Convent Kalutara in the Under-18 Singles final and beat her after a tough battle while undergoing similar experience in the Girls’ Under-15 Singles final against Yahani Mendis of Girls’ High School Mt. Lavinia.
