The growing nepotism within Government came in for strong criticism in Parliament yesterday, when a senior JVP member alleged that colossal amounts of money was being spent on the lavish and extravagant lifestyles of a few, while the majority of people in the country were forced to put up with many hardships.

“Some leader’s children wear shoes that cost Rs 150,000 a pair and belts that cost Rs 64,000 each. In addition to that, they drive around in Lamborghini cars that cost over Rs 50 million,” said JVP National List MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
He said that 20 per cent of the new generation of rich that this government has spawned, enjoys over 55 per cent of the wealth of the country, while those in the lower strata get less than 10 per cent of the share.

“Today, ministers are too frightened to speak out. There are 28 files pertaining to allegations against Ministers, at the Bribery Commission. If anyone makes a noise, they will open the files,” MP Dissanayake said.
He said that Minister Champika Ranawaka had started to make some noise over alleged corruption within Government, but since then, he too has become quiet.
“The Government promised to make this country an aviation, naval, education and power hub, but has failed in all these areas,” he added.
