Application for admissions to State-run Universities to go online: UGC Addl. Sec.
View(s):Online application to State-run universities will be available for the first time in Sri Lanka from next year, said Additional Secretary to the University Grants Commission (UGC), Dr Priyantha Premakumara.
He said that GCE Advanced Level qualified students desirous of gaining admission to any State-run university, could apply online, to save time for both parties.
“Presently, students have to post their applications or hand them over to the UGC. However, when the new service is introduced, they will not have to waste time in this process,” Dr Premakumara said.
He added that, discussions are under way to make the system mandatory, or retain it as an alternate method of applying to a university.
He said that, once the service is established, Admission Dept services will be available any day, including Saturday and Sunday.
“Furthermore, this system will help reduce the time interval between the release of results and cutoff marks for various courses. Earlier, Applications had to be received, analogs opened, and details checked and categorized, but now, everything can be done online,” he explained, adding that the service will also enable the UGC to access vital information helpful for decision making and policy development of the university system.
The public will be informed of its establishment via newspaper adverts and notices. Dr. Premakumara said all students will be notified of the Application procedures too, in the near future. (AW)
