University schols from China for Central Province students
View(s):A delegation visiting Sri Lanka from Chengdu municipal government in China has come to an agreement with the locally-based Sri Lanka- China Trade and Investment Promotion Chamber to grant scholarships to selected schools in the Central Province, to attend 19 universities in China, according to a chamber statement.
The statement also noted that this granting of scholarships was part of a series of events held in Kandy to commemorate the 65th National Day of the People’s Republic of China, which was also the first time such celebrations were held outside Colombo.
Further, and in conjunction with the Department of Education of the Central Province, the above parties also entered into discussions with regards to the “implementation of educational and cultural exchange programmes between Kandy and Chengdu, where it was decided to have student and teacher exchanges between the two cities along with a home stay system”, as per the statement.
Held at the International Buddhist Conference Centre in Pallekele on October 11, the events celebrating China’s national day included a meeting with the Governor of the Central Province, Tikiri Kebbekaduwa, as well as the delegation paying homage to the Noble Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha at the inner chamber of Sri Dalada Maligawa. Additionally, the “visiting delegation was taken around and shown the International Buddhist Museum maintained by the Sri Dalada Maligawa administration. Where relics of 17 countries are displayed”, noted the statement.
Another event held to mark this occasion was the awarding of winners of an essay and art competition for the students of the Central Province on the theme “Sri Lanka China Relations”. Also, 100 school bags were gifted to the students attending this prize giving. (JH)
