Allowances of local councillors doubled
View(s):Members of municipal, urban councils and pradeshiya sabhas are to get huge increases in allowances from this month, Local Government Minister A.L.M. Athaullah told Parliament yesterday. Mayors and UCs Chairpersons will get Rs. 30,000 a month while their deputies will get Rs. 25,000.
Members of MCs and UCs will get a monthly allowance of Rs. 20,000. Earlier, mayors or UC heads were paid Rs. 15,000 and members Rs. 7,000.
PS chairpersons will get a monthly allowance of Rs 25,000, vice chairpersons Rs. 20,000 and members Rs. 15,000.
Earlier, the PS heads were paid Rs. 10,000, deputies Rs. 6,500 and members Rs. 5,000. There are 23 MCs, 41 UCs and 271 Pradeshiya Sabhas in the country with more than 3,000 members.
