Kandy town’s public facilities get a new look
President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday declared open, among other public facilities, a pedestrian walk in Kandy town, enabling the public to avoid walking on the main road.
The pedestrian lane extends from the clock tower to the goods shed bus stand. The opening of the multimillion rupee facilities started with a new shelter at the clock tower bus stand, the pedestrian lane and a shopping complex for vendors who were displaced from the strip of land adjoining the railroad.
The pedestrian lane runs from the clock tower bus stand to the goods shed bus stand, parallel to the Kandy- Matale Railway line, with a railing separating the two. This is helpful to all
those using the road to walk to the goods shed bus stand, the Railway Station and the Post Office. Or else, pedestrians have to use the rail tracks, which has claimed a number of lives over the years.
The approach road to Kandy town from the railway station had metal sheds, installed by the late G.B. De Silva of the Kandy Municipal Council (KMC), for the benefit of ‘walking
vendors’. However, most of them had sublet them, and the entire stretch was an eyesore. These vendors are now housed in the shopping complex next to the Electricity Board with their metal cubicles making way for more projects.
This development work was carried out by the Urban Development Authority under Minister Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the Kandy Municipal Council (KMC).
Ministers and members of the KMC-led by Kandy Mayor Mahendra Ratwatte were present.
