Doctor presents herArangetram
It’s not every day a medical doctor is ready to ‘ascend to the stage’ with her Arangetram, but dancing Visharad Dr. Udumbara Sewwandi Kumari from the Paediatric Cardiology Unit of the Lady Ridgeway Hospital, Colombo is ready to be the first doctor to not only have her Arangetram but also to receive a Visharad degree in dancing. The event which was held on Saturday, November 15 at the Tower Hall, Maradana was graced by First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa as the chief guest.
Dr. Udumbara obtained her degree in the field of Bharatha Natyam from Bhathkande Sangeeth Vidya Peet from Lucknow, India in 2012 which was the year she also got her medical degree. She studied Bharatha Natyam under Dr. Miranda Hemalatha in the Miranda Hemalatha Kala Ashramaya. She has also received national level recognition in poetry and lyric writing. Along with Bharatha Natyam she has also studied Kathak dancing and is also an international bronze medallist in Ballroom and Latin American dancing.
She is also currently taking part in a project at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital along with Dr. Miranda and Prof. Manouri Senanayake to use dance therapy for children suffering from Down’s Syndrome as well as slow learning.
