Jith’s seasonal concert to celebrate a time of peace
Veteran director and chairperson of the Creative Arts Foundation, Jith Peiris is all set for his annual Christmas show. “Dashing through the snow” will be held on November 29 and 30 at the Bishop’s College Auditorium from 7.30 p.m. onwards.
The curtain opener for the show will be by well known male choral group, The Revelations, setting the mood with a couple of well known Christmas hits. The drama that follows in three acts is a comedy set in Tinseltown, Texas in America in an inn called the Snowflake Manor. The story revolves around the visitors to the Manor and the hilarious incidents that take place.
The ten member cast includes familiar faces from Colombo’s theatre scene. The sets have all been done by Jith himself. Jith recalls how he did his first Christmas show in 1980 called “Who killed Santa Claus?” along with the International Theatre Group which was a popular drama troupe at the time. The show ran to full houses on all nine days of performance and since then Jith has been having a Christmas show almost every year.
“It’s a time of peace and of merry celebration. Especially in this time of reconciliation in our country I believe this is the time the art forms of song, acting and dance can flourish if the right messages are conveyed to the public. Christmas is the birth of the Prince of Peace and He wasn’t born only for the Christians but for the whole world,” says the veteran theatre man.
The show is held to collect funds for the annual Christmas project of the theatre group which donates 12 yards of uniform material, a pair of school shoes and a school bag as well as the entire school book list to more than 430 children.
Tickets for the event will be available from November 17 at the Bishop’s College auditorium.
