Vijaya and Christ Church joint champs
Two Matale schools, Vijaya and Christ Church were declared joint Champions at the inaugural ‘Thomian Sevens’ invitation schools- seven- a side hockey tournament for boys under 19 concluded at Edward Park in Matale.
The final between the two schools Vijaya and Christ Church could not be played due to adverse weather conditions that prevailed in the afternoon. Then the organisers decided to declare the two teams as joint champions.
On their way to the finals, Vijaya beat Joseph Vas College Wennappuwa 3-1 on penalties while Christ Church outplayed St. Thomas’ ‘blues’ Matale 4-1 in the semi-finals.
The tournament conducted by Matale Old Thomians’ Hockey Association (M.O.T.H.A) with ‘Ritzbury’ – a product of C.B.L. Food International (Pvt) as the main sponsor saw eighteen (18) leading hockey playing schools from Colombo, Kandy, Matale, Gampaha, Galle and Badulla taking part.
Joseph Vas had the consolation of winning the third place beating St. Thomas’ Blues Matale 3-1 on penalties in the play off.
C C Chandrasena of Christ Church and Sangeeth Amarasinghe of Vijaya were named as two best players of the tournament.
In addition hockey sticks, each worth Rs. 10000/- were presented to the best players of quarter final matches and the consolation final.
