Mudiyanse, a rich aristocrat who had many a dream for him and his family has fallen to the depth of poverty now. With his wife Punna, he is in a battle to provide for the family of ten children. Even though the extreme poverty has left him to behave ruthlessly at times, Mudiyanse generally is a man full of kindness and goodness. The pride of his family history batters him whenever he thinks about the present poverty stricken life he undergoes.
The story starts with the birth of the youngest child. He is obviously a weak child at his very birth. This enrages Mudiyanse and he even tries to sell this child. But Punna, the mother with so much motherly love determines to bring the child up somehow. ‘Amma’ is mainly woven around the courageous journey of Punna who brings up all her children despite all the obstacles.
