Insurance cover next year for students in State schools
All students in State-run schools will be given health insurance cover from next year, Education Services Minister Duminda Dissanayake said.
He said together with Sri Lanka Insurance the Ministry will offer students an insurance policy covering many areas. He added that students will have to pay Rs. 250 annually to maintain the insurance cover.
“Even if they collect one rupee per day the children can collect enough money to pay for it. We came up with this idea to help both parents and children financially,” Minister Dissanayake said. Under the insurance scheme a student’s hospital expenses will be covered and up to Rs. 15,000 will be provided if necessary for a body check up or scan in a private institution. “A student will also receive Rs. 100,000 in case of the death of a parent due to natural causes.
This money is to be spent on educational purposes of the student,” he said.
The minister added that the ministry will not be paying the insurance premium but students will have to pay the money themselves. He said that this will also teach them to save money for a good purpose.
