Lyceum Nugegoda and Wattala excel at Basketball

Girls titles at the Carlton Cup 2014 Basketball Championship concluded at the Henry Pedris Courts in Colombo last weekend.
The Under-14 Boys’ final was won by Lyceum International School Nugegoda who beat Gateway College Rajagiriya by a big margin. Lyceum cagers were ahead 19-3 at the end of the first half and went on to dominate as they sealed the win at 41-12.
Amal International School recorded a resounding 40-25 win against St. Joseph’s College Wattala to claim the third place playoff. The winners edged out their opponents by a point to lead 12-11 at half time.
The Girls’ Under-14 final was a nail-biter and the eventual winners Lyceum Wattala bounced back after trailing in the first half, to record a thrilling 27-26 win.
The two finalists, branches of Lyceum International School from Nugegoda and Wattala, gave a fine fight and played a fitting final to the excitement of those who witnessed the game. Lyceum Nugegoda enjoyed a 15-9 lead at half time but lost momentum towards the end. St. Joseph’s College Nugegoda played a neat game to beat Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya
by 28-16, after leading 12-5 at half time.
The Under-19 3×3 titles for Boys and Girls were won by Gateway College and Visakha Vidyalaya respectively. Gateway beat St. Joseph’s College 7-6 after a thrilling battle in the Boys’ final while Visakha had a better game against Presbyterian Girls’ School to record a 9-5 win.
