OpenArc recognised to offer BIT degree of Moratuwa University
View(s):In a bid to create synergy and enable an output of graduates of very high value, the University of Moratuwa (UOM) has recognised OpenArc as a partner organisation to offer the Bachelor of Information Technology Degree of Moratuwa University.
Since 2007, OpenArc has offered one hundred and fifty two scholarships to deserving school leavers to follow its Diploma and subsequently the Bachelor of Information Technology degree programme of Colombo University, which it carries out. In this backdrop, this year OpenArc will offer 10 Career Sponsorships for full-time Moratuwa University Bachelor of Information Technology students, according to OpenArc Chairman Daya Hettiarachchi.
“Under this career sponsorship programme, which is exclusively available for the undergraduates of BIT, Moratuwa, who opt for ‘full time studies’ we plan to waive the tuition fees charged by OpenArc for the entire three (3) years of the BIT degree programme,” he said, adding that Industrial Training would be provided by OpenArc. While providing the students job orientation, a job is guaranteed at the end of the degree at OpenArc, Mr. Hettiarachchi reiterated.
The specialty of the full time programme is that it has many additional study areas to prepare the students for the ICT industry, Mr. Hettiarachchi explained, adding that the students are required to complete at least two additional projects from the industry on top of the degree components. “They will also learn Japanese language to prepare for the job market in Japan,” he said.
UOM boasts of producing highly employable graduates and claim that their students are employed 100% even before graduating, especially in the ICT Industry.
“When we advertise for IT graduates for OpenArc Systems Management (Pvt) Ltd., we receive hundreds of applications. However, even to select one person is difficult due to their poor knowledge, zero industrial exposure and incorrect attitudes. This is a major gap which needs to be addressed,” Mr. Hettiarachchi said.
He said that with twenty three years of experience in major scale software development for the banking and finance industry and educating school leavers on industry-oriented programmes, OpenArc has designed and annually improved a comprehensive programme to bridge this gap.
“In 2007, we designed a four year programme which helps a school leaver with a minimum of three passes in the GCE (A/L) to be developed as an ‘industry-fit graduate,” he said, highlighting that OpenArc campus has been feeding all important human resources for these projects and has been producing highly employable IT graduates.
“We strongly believe that the new partnership with the UOM will take us to the next level in producing IT graduates,” Mr. Hettiarachchi said.
