Niluka Karunaratne Badminton Club and Aponso Badminton Academy emerged champions in the Men’s and Women’s ‘A’ divisions at the 41st Western Province Badminton Team Championships 2014 concluded at the S. Thomas’ College Gymnasium last weekend.

A total of 60 men and women badminton players representing 36 clubs with a considerable number of Sri Lanka ranked players competed in this tournament. The Western Province Badminton Association since its formation forty one years ago conducted its Inter-Club Team Championship among its member clubs only. For the third time, the clubs and institutions in the Western Province and even non-members were also permitted to take part in the championship. This year’s tournament was conducted in five segments for men and Ladies in ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’ and “D’ Divisions and an event for the veterans. Men’s ‘A’ Division winners Niluka Karunaratne Badminton Club received the FKCI Asia Challenge Trophy while Aponso Badminton Academy received the Addidas Trophy for winning the Ladies ‘A’ Division title. The other division winners were awarded with cash and badminton equipment. The Western Province Badminton Association is one of the affiliates of the Sri Lanka Badminton Association and had been in the forefront in Sri Lanka for a number of years.

This year’s tournament was sponsored by FKCI Asia, Hameedias and co-sponsored by Janashakthi Insurance and Emerald International.
