“Country Roads” concert raises Rs. 500,000 for mother-and-child support on plantations
View(s):The annual “Country Roads’ concert, the 21st in the series held on its 26th anniversary in Colombo, last week donated Rs. 500,000 to Save the Children Sri Lanka to support its mother-and-child programmes on Sri Lankan plantations.
The concert of country and western, and folk music which featured the Mavericks from Germany, folk singer Astrid Brook from the UK and, from Sri Lanka, the Cosmic Rays, Anno Domini and the Country Revival Band (with Feizal Samath, Juragan Majid and Thilan Wijesinghe), was able to collect a total of Rs. 700,000 from sponsorship and ticket sales.

The Country Music Foundation (CMF), the founders and promoters of this annual charity concert, also donated a cheque for Rs. 100,000 to the Oxonian Heart Foundation (OHF) which helps to treat the impoverished and destitute with heart disease. The CMF contribution would be used to sponsor a child under this project. The OHF website is www.oxonianhf.com while the CMF blog is https://countryroadslk.wordpress.com. The CMF has raised millions of rupees from its concerts since 1988 to help needy children.
CMF Founder Feizal Samath said plans are also underway to provide another 100,000 rupees to a family with a disabled child. The Rs. 500,000 cheque to Save the Children was presented to its Sri Lanka Country Director William Lynch by CMF Founder Feizal Samath in the presence of Co-founder Juragan Majid.
