Await yet another Christmas special with the SOSL
View(s):Christmas with the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka is an event looked forward to by the music-loving people of Colombo. The SOSL’s annual Christmas concert is its most popular and anticipated, and this year’s programme will not disappoint. On December 14 the SOSL, directed by Dushyanthi Perera, will whirl you into the Christmas season and fill you with the spirit of the holidays with a programme full of seasonal favourites as well as some thrilling new holiday music.
The orchestra will be joined by two of the foremost choirs in Sri Lanka—Soul Sounds and The Old Joes Choir. Together, they will perform a magical selection of songs both old and new, fresh and familiar, cheerful and nostalgic. You will also be able to sing along to some of your favourites like Silver Bells and Jingle Bell Rock, and lift your voice in some of the more traditional carols.
The orchestra will perform a stirring set of pieces, including Suppe’s exciting Light Cavalry Overture, and some thrilling music from a couple of holiday-themed movies like Home Alone and Polar Express. In a novel break from tradition, this year the SOSL will also feature a children’s choir—the Soul Sounds children’s choir, which will perform the set of songs from Home Alone. One of the highlights of the evening will be Danzon no. 2 by the Mexican composer Arturo Marquez—a piece so full of rhythm that you will want to leave your seats and dance.
The SOSL has been fortunate to have the generous sponsorship of Link Natural Products and Standard Chartered Bank over a number of years. It is with their support that the orchestra has been able to present their annual Christmas programme, which, over the years has become one of the most well-attended family events of the season.
The SOSL Christmas Concert is on December 14 at the Ladies’ College Hall at 7.30 p.m.
