Army BC looking forward to retain title
The 89th Men’s and Women’s National Boxing Championship conducted by the Amateur Boxing Association is scheduled to be worked off from Tuesday at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium.
The five-day meet due to end on December 13 will see the participation of Sri Lanka’s top pugilists hailing from the three security forces, Slimline BC, Police BC along with some of the other top clubs in the island.
The meet is open to all male and female boxers over 18 years and under 40 years and only boxers’ who have participated at all major boxing meets and winners and runners up at the ABA Novices, Intermediate, Stubbs Shield and winners of junior nationals are eligible to take part at this meet.
Army BC the defending champions will no doubt go all out to retain the title but they will face stiff opposition from last year’s runners-up Slimline BC who was adjudged the most successful boxing club last year.
The cynosure of all eyes will be on Malith Prabashwara who was the best boxer of the year in 2013 and this year he has been in top form in the light flyweight category and will be one of the strong contenders in this weight. The other top boxers in action will be the ones who became best boxers in the men’s and women’s categories last year — P.V.D.D. Saparamadu of Unichela BC, K.A.L.U. Kaushalya of Air Force, Gayan Jayaweera of Slimline BC and W.R.T. Weerakkody of Army BC.
The battle for the title will no doubt be between defending champions Army BC and Slimline BC who are the two top contenders while the boxers from Navy BC, Air Force BC, Police, Unichela BC, MAS Silueta and young aspiring pugilists from schools such as Vidyartha, Seevali Ratnapura, Vidyaratana Horana and Royal Colombo will also be looking forward to showcase their talent.
The weigh-in for both the categories will be held on December 8 between 8.00 a.m. and 10.00 a.m. at the same venue and the draw is also scheduled to be held on the same day after the weigh-in is completed.
