National Baseball C’ships today
View(s):The final of the Sri Lanka Telecom National Baseball Championship 2014 will be held from 11.00am today at the Japan-Sri Lanka Baseball ground in Diyagama, Homagama.
Four teams qualified for the final round including hot favourites Ranabima Royal, Old Royalists, Sri Lanka Navy and Kandy Baseball Club will vie for the top two slots in the final showdown today.
The top ten teams of the domestic baseball circuit were picked to compete in this tournament, which is one of the important competitions of the Sri Lanka Baseball Association (SLBA) annual calendar.
Besides the main attraction, which is the final, a women’s baseball match between Sri Lanka Army and Sri Lanka Navy will be played today at 8.00am. This will be the first official women’s match to be played in Sri Lanka after recommencing women’s baseball in the country. Women’s baseball was reintroduced to the country by the SLBA under the guidance of its current president Kalinga Indatissa. The SLBA also stated that plans are underway to field a women’s baseball team representing the country in the next Asian championship.
The SLT National Baseball Championship 2014 began on November 21 as a double eliminator competition and continued for three weekends before reaching the final stage. Sri Lanka’s top, well renowned and strong teams competed with a host of national players representing their respective teams. Winners of the tournament will receive the SLT Cup and awards will be presented for individual performances by the SLBA who is associated by the sponsorship of Sri Lanka Telecom for the second consecutive year.
