The Education Ministry, along with officials of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption (CIABC), will launch an anti-bribery and anti-corruption drive in Government schools starting next year, in a bid to stamp out corrupt practices that have become rampant in school admissions and other related activities in the Education sector, said Ministry Secretary, Anura Dissanayaka.

“There is an urgent need to address the issue of bribery by educating schoolchildren about such issues. A national action plan has been drafted in this connection and the Education sector is included in it as well,” he said.

The programme will include lectures for children, as well as dramas, exhibitions etc. that will convey the message to them, he added.

A seminar in this connection was held recently attended by Chief Justice Mohan Peries P.C.

It was decided here that it was important to educate schoolchildren that bribery is not an acceptable practice and should be eradicated.

Many allegations have been leveled at the Education sector that large sums of money are given to get children admitted to government schools as well as other corrupt practices such as giving false addresses, changing birth certificates etc. to gain admission to popular government schools.
