Lecturers of all State universities, on Tuesday staged a protest in front of the University Grants Commission (UGC), demanding that all gazette notifications granting provisions to establish private universities, be cancelled

Over 500 academics belonging to almost all 15 State universities participated in the protest organised by the Federation of University Teachers’ Association (FUTA). They raised questions on good governance of the UGC as well.

“Numerous letters we have written to the UGC regarding issues we are concerned with, have been ignored. We have not had proper replies to any of the issues. That is why we decided to protest in front of the UGC,” said FUTA General Secretary, Prof Rohan Fernando.
