Sri Lanka’s Motor Traffic Department (DMT) is currently testing the Online Vehicle Information System (OVIS) which provides details of all registered vehicles with DMT for the benefit of authorised users of this facility and vehicle owners, S.H. Harischandra, Commissioner General of Motor Traffic disclosed.

Information of vehicles on 15 fields could be checked via Internet under this system, he said adding that when a person wants to buy a second hand vehicle, he or she can search for the vehicle title record and other data including registration by logging into the department web site.
The OVIS will be launched within the next two weeks to the public and the DMT will levy Rs.150 from users of this facility as a subscription fee, he revealed. Payment will be through credit card and made online.

This new system will prevent fraudulent practices in vehicle transfers and it will make such deals more transparent, he said.

In the meantime the issuing of revenue licenses online for vehicle owners in the Western Province has been expanded to the Southern Province recently, he said noting that this facility will be made available for motorists in Kalutara, Hambantota, Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Kandy, Jaffna and several other areas soon. Sri Lanka’s car owners will be able to renew and pay for annual revenue licenses through their mobile phones and credit cards and this is as part of efforts to boost government service delivery, he disclosed. The system will also send a text message notifying the expiry date of revenue license, the following year if a mobile number is provided at the time of renewal. Sri Lanka’s vehicle owners already have a facility to pay for revenue licenses online through a credit card, he disclosed. This type of solution is called ‘whole-of-Government solutions’ as the citizen can transact with multiple Government organisations without visiting a single organisation.

This kind of solutions provides the ultimate in citizen-friendly services as all the requirements of the citizens can be met without stepping out of their homes. This system connect WP-DMT, DMT online with nine insurance companies, two emission testing companies, two banks and nine mobile phone service provider companies, he revealed.
