‘Meththara’, a new stage drama written and directed by Champa Mahawedage, a former actor of Sarachchandra drama troupe will be staged at 6.45 pm on Saturday December 27 at the Navarangahala of Royal College, Colombo 7.

The story of ‘Meththara’ depicts the conflict between king ‘Chanda’ a tyrant who follows the path of war towards emperorship and his daughter ‘Meththara’ who follows the Buddhist path leading to ‘Nirwana’. The surprising reaction of Thara to her father’s tyranny would be a fascinating experience for the audience. While the content of ‘Meththara’ embeds the Buddhist concept of compassion, its form would reflect the characteristics of Deshiya Natya Sampradaya introduced by Prof. Sarachchandra in 1956.

The cast with versatile and up and coming stars includes Wijerathna Warakagoda (pothegura) award winning actress Theruni Ashantha (Meththara) and some of the well known Sarachchandra troupe actors Janaka Munasinghe (King Chanda) and Rajitha Hewathanthirige (conspirator). Music of ‘Meththara’ is composed and directed by Indrajith Mirihana with orchestration and training by Shantha Pieris. Choreography and costumes are created by Prasannajith Abeysuriya.

Champa Mahawedage staged his first dramatic production ‘Daskon’ last year with a star studded cast with choreography by Ravibandhu Vidayapathy.
