The Sri Lanka Institute of Advanced Technology Education (SLIATE) will be known as the Advanced Institute of Technology (AIT) from 2015, and also undergo several changes in its course curriculum, in a bid to attract more students next year, said Higher Education Ministry Secretary Dr Sunil Navaratne.

Along with this, the 2015 student intake into the institutes will increase from 6,000 to 10,000, he said.

Dr Nawaratne said that the AIT will be made more competitive with private education institutes.

Several new courses including Aviation, Naval Studies, Petroleum Engineering and Architecture will be introduced.

These institutes are presently located in 18 districts. By year end, three new institutes will be opened in Ratnapura, Tangalle and Vavuniya by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, so that, each district will have a new institute, he said.

Dr Nawaratne said that measures have also been taken to address salary issues of Lecturers at the institutes. On the instructions of the President, they will be paid the same salaries as the Lecturers in universities. (DW)
