A proposal by President Mahinda Rajapaksa to adopt a new administrative procedure in the granting of dual citizenship was approved by the Cabinet this week. However, the new procedures are yet to be communicated to the Department of Immigration, Acting Controller M. N. Ranasinghe said.

“There were a few changes in the draft policy sent to us and but we have not seen the final version approved by the Cabinet,” he said.
The department hoped to receive the finalised policy next week and would change procedures accordingly, Mr. Ranasinghe said.
Approval for these process had been delayed for more than two years.

Granting of dual citizenship was suspended indefinitely two years ago by the Government, while foreign nationals holding dual citizenship in Sri Lanka had their status reviewed.

Earlier authorities claimed that the dual citizenship scheme was being misused by certain sections.
