He said that textbooks and uniform material were handed over to the children at the start of their school vacation earlier in the month.
“With floods in several areas, we have reports that these books and uniform material have been washed away or damaged. We have directed the Government agents to report on the damage,” he said.
Mr Dissanayake said that Distress loans will also be provided to affected teachers, for which the Treasury has released Rs 345 million.
Meanwhile, several Educational institutions islandwide have been hit by the floods, said provincial officials.
The Mannikkam Patti Muslim Vidyalaya is one such school affected by the floods, along with several other schools.
In Puttalam, the Vocational Training Institute is also under water.
Reports from the provinces said that in view of the flood situation, it was likely that some of the schools’ re-openings will be delayed.
“Some of the schools that have gone under water had their furniture damaged, which may need to be replaced,” said an Education official in the East.
