Suspend opening Mahindodaya school labs during election period: Polls Chief to Ed. Min.
View(s):The Elections Commissioner has directed the Education Ministry of to suspend any ceremony to open new Laboratories under the Mahindodaya Scheme, during the Presidential election period.
Accordingly, the Education Ministry has suspended all ceremonial openings of Mahindodaya laboratories in State schools during this period.
Objections were raised to the Election Commission by the Observation Front of the New Democratic Party, that these events will be manipulated for political purposes, as stipulated by the Election Commission.
There are around 28 schools in the Northern Province (NP) and 18 schools in the Eastern Province where these events were to take place, and NP Governor G.A. Chandrasiri has been informed by the Election Commission not to involve politicians for such events, if it is to take place during this period.
Education Minster Bandula Gunewardena said that he was aware of the regulations pertaining to the Election, but his participation was important for these events, as having them without him will be of no use.
However, he expects to ceremonially hand over the laboratories to the students after January 8, as agreed. They have been able to hand over 250 laboratories out of 1,000 laboratories proposed under the Mahindodaya scheme said the Minster.
