A combined team effort helped St. Peter’s College record a nerve-breaking 3-wicket win against St. Joseph’s College in their annual Old Boys’ Twenty20 Big Match played in Queensland, Australia last weekend.

Joes electing to bat first piled up 157 for the loss of seven wickets and the Peterites held their nerves to reach the target after losing the same amount of wickets but with nine deliveries to spare.

The Joes taking advantage of the slightly cooler temperature started off in good stead. Nigel van der Wert was the man in form for the Darley Road School as he top scored with a useful knock of 42 with the support of Dilan Perera who clobbered 34. Nigel was named the best batsman of the game. The stage was set for a truly gentlemen’s game when one of the Joes walked after nicking the ball even the umpire didn’t rule him out.
Mario Joel, who was adjudged the best bowler of the game, captured three scalps conceding 15 runs for the Peterites and former school deputy skipper and fast bowler Umhar Samsudeen bowled effectively to end up with figures of 3 for 23. Chaminda Perera claimed a scalp conceding 24 runs and returned to hammer 34 runs to earn the man-of-the-match award. Debutant Nilendra Amarasinghe was the anchorman of the Peterite innings. He top scored with a useful knock of 36. Gihan Piyatunge remained unbeaten on 31 when the Peterites saw the winning post. Dilan Perera claimed three wickets as Nigel returned to capture two scalps.

The winning Peterites led by Sohan Piyatunge, comprised Chaminda Perera as vice captain, Glen Tucker, Umhar Samsudeen, Gihan Piyatunge, Mario Emmanuel, Mario Joel, Ganesh Pathmanathan, Nilendra Amerasinghe, Aaron Perera, Chanaka de Silva and Chatura de Silva.
