North, South top A/L rankings
View(s):Students from the South and Jaffna topped the ranks in last year’s GCE Advanced Level (A/L) results released last Saturday (27). Paakyaraj Dharukeesan of Jaffna Hindu College was ranked first in the Physical Science stream. Dharukeesan who attended Chavakachcheri Hindu College up to Grade 5, entered Jaffna Hindu College for his Secondary education after doing well in the Scholarship exam.
Dharukeesan who studied in English, says it helped him access a larger resource base and knowledge, both through foreign books and the internet.
He is looking forward to his undergraduate studies at Moratuwa University, and wants to become an Electronic Engineer.
H.G. Hiruni Udara from Sujatha Maha Vidyalaya, Matara, who came first in the Biological Science stream was always a high achiever. She came fifth in the island in the GCE Ordinary Level and was first in the island in the Olympiad. Born to parents in the Medical profession, her dream was to follow their footsteps and become a doctor. Her older sister too is studying Medicine at the Karapitiya Medical Faculty.
“We don’t have a TV in our house and I enjoy playing the piano. I don’t think A/L is a competitive exam, you just need to do your work well,” she said.
The first in the island in the Commerce stream is another southerner, U.G. Piyumi Dhanajana, a product of Southland College, Galle. A student of many talents, who also does not watch TV, is also fluent in French, having translated French novels into Sinhala, in her spare time.
Shavindi Nethsala Pathirana of Visakha Balika Vidyalaya, Colombo, studied for the exam aiming to achieve the best results. Hailing from the hill-country, she attended Lakshapana Madi Maha Vidyalaya before entering Visakha Vidyalaya.
Nipuni Dias Nagahawatta of Musaeus College, Colombo, achieved the highest marks in General/Other Stream.
