The recovery of a ballot paper or a specimen of a ballot paper in the Balangoda area is being probed by the Elections Commissioner, an official said yesterday. An Assistant Superintendent of Police has been assigned to carry out the inquiry following a directive from the Elections Commissioner, Additional Commissioner M. U. Amaradasa said.

He said the inquiry was being carried out to ascertain whether it was a genuine ballot paper or a specimen. The ballot or the specimen had been marked for President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Copies of the ballot paper or the specimen had been distributed at a UPFA meeting by Imbulpe Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Indu Gunatillake.

The initial complaint was lodged by the People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) to the Assistant Commissioner of Elections in Ratnapura.  Mr. Gunatillake said it was a specimen ballot paper to educate the voters on how to vote.
