JVP, TNA won’t accept Cabinet posts

The JVP and the TNA will not accept Cabinet portfolios in the Government of new President Maithripala Sirisena. The JVP which supported President Sirisena’s campaign yesterday said it had no intention of taking Cabinet portfolios, but would extend its cooperation in Parliament to implement the 100 day programme.

JVP frontliner Vijitha Herath said the party would not tolerate any attempts by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and former ministers to sabotage the 100 day programme. TNA Spokesperson M.A. Sumanthiran said his party had declined an invitation to be part of the Cabinet. However, he refused to give reasons for the party’s decision.

Meanwhile, the Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP), a coalition partner of United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA), has sought an appointment with President Sirisena to discuss policy matters.

EPDP Leader Douglas Devananda said his party, with a view to finding solutions to problems faced by the Tamil people, had requested an appointment with new government leaders to discuss their policies, including the ’100 day programme’.

“If the new Government sends positive signals, we will take part in the new Cabinet, even if the TNA is part of it,” he said.
