Corruption: Tall order for new regime to clean up

View(s):

Corruption was one of the core issues on which the main opposition canvassed support for its candidate, Maithripala Sirisena at the January 8 presidential poll. It is in this context that the Business Times is publishing some of the current stories in the world pertaiing to the battle against corruption.

Mostly focusing on events in Asia which has relevance to Sri Lanka, there is also a report from the US on efforts to curb corruption.
That Associated Press news agency report also refers to the US “Justice Department’s efforts against kleptocracy, the enrichment of foreign rulers at the expense of their citizens”. Mr. Sirisena, in an eve-of-election interview with the Business Times on January 4, said corruption was so rampant that awarding a contract has become – from national to local level – a mode of entertaining henchmen, so much so that this regime can be called a ‘kleptocracy’ (rule by thieves).
