Doubles for Dinethya, Oshini, Prabuddhi, Janeli, Wenuka
The 3rd Queen’s Open A Grade Tennis Championship organised by the Queen’s Club, the tennis arm of Gymkhana Club held at the Queens Club tennis court at Bauddaloka Mawatha, saw some fancied players being beaten in the junior championship.
Five players Dinethya Dharmaratne, Oshini Herath, Prabuddhi Perera, Janeli Manamperi and Wenuka Kithnula succeeded in winning two titles each with some of them overcoming the top seeded players.
Dinethya the top seed in the under girls under 10 age group had little difficulty in brushing off the challenge of unseeded Panchali Weerasekera and she kept up to her reputation and went on to win the doubles title partnered by Akithma Dias.
Oshini, seeded fourth, pulled off an upset win over second seed Anjalika Kurera to take the under 14 girl’s title and then partnered by Neyara Weerawansa bagged the doubles title in the same age group.
Prabuddhi defeated the top seed Anika Seneviratne to take the under 14 girls title and then with Anika pulled off a double by winning the doubles title but she was unfortunate to miss out a triple as again, partnered by Anika, was beaten in the under 16 girls doubles final.
Janeli, the top seeded player in the under 16 girls singles, had to pull out all her tricks out of the bag to overcome stiff challenge from unseeded Anika Seneviratne before scraping through to win the title.
In the boy’s category Wenuka Kithnula was the only player who was able to clinch a double. The top seeded Wenuka competing in the under 10 age group bagged the singles title defeated Mateesha Nettasinghe and then along with Zaidh Zihar went on clinch the doubles title.
There were some upsets in the other final encounters with Avindra Perera (u16 top) being beaten in the semi-final with unseeded Vibuda Wijebandara winning the title.
Thewuni Devaraja toppled the favourite Thisuri Molligoda to lift the girl’s under 18 title while Avindra
Perera took the boy’s under 18 title after securing wins against top seed Archana Lokuge and second seeded B. Suren.
The under 16 double final Avindra Perera/ Innthujan Selvaratnarajah and Ravindu Weerasinghe/Vibuda Wijebandara is yet to be played.
