Principals will no longer be able to decide on the time to commence school sessions, and will have to observe fixed times of 7.30 am to 1.30 pm, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has decided.

This follows complaints from parents and teachers of Mahinda Rajapaksa Maha Vidyalaya, Homagama, where school hours are from 7.30 am to 3.30 pm.

He said that some parents had complained that children were falling asleep in class as they had to wait long hours in their classrooms.

“In some instances, children reached their homes around 6 pm, and not even have time to play. There should have been proper consultations to extend school hours as it has an impact on the children,” he added.
