The Jaffna University Employees Union (JUEU) staged a protest in the university premises yesterday, demanding the immediate resignation of 14 external members of the University Council who were allegedly appointed by a former minister. Students, academic staff, and non academic staff participated in the protest against a bad political culture which had evolved at the University Council since 2009.

Earlier the union decided to refrain from conducting duties from Friday. The Vice President of JUEU, S. Kalaraj told the Sunday Times that former Minister Douglas Devananda had appointed 14 external members to the University Council and interfered in even the appointment of labourers.

“When the election of Deans were held last month, these 14 appointees were instructed by Mr Devananda to select a particular candidate. They used to have ‘pre-council’ meetings with him at his office before the Council meeting at the university,” he said. According to Mr. Kalaraj the University Council consists of 14 external members who were appointed by the former minister and 13 members of the staff.
