Justice Kanagasabapathy Sripavan was sworn in as Sri Lanka’s 44th Chief Justice before President Maithripala Sirisena on Friday.

Chief Justice Sripavan was born on 29th February 1952 and studied at Hindu College, Jaffna and graduated from the Sri Lanka Law College as well as the Queen Mary & Westfield College of the University of London.

He was enrolled as an Attorney at Law on 23 August 1977 and practised law at the Unofficial Bar till 1978, when he was appointed Acting State Counsel. He became a Senior State Counsel in March 1989.

Other positions held by Chief Justice Sripavan include that of Deputy Solicitor General to which post he was appointed in 1996. He also functioned as the Head of the Court of Appeal Unit and handled a large volume of work both in the Court of Appeal and in the Supreme Court, including Bills and Fundamental Rights Applications

He was appointed a Judge of the Court of Appeal in May 2002 and rose to the position of President of the Court of Appeal in March 2007. He was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court on 27 March 2008 and has acted in the post of Chief Justice on three occasions.Justice Anil Gooneratne, the longest serving Judge of the Court of Appeal took his oaths as a Judge of the Supreme Court before President Sirisena on Friday.

Educated at Royal College, Colombo, Justice Anil Gooneratne holds a Master’s degree in Law (LLM) from the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom. His dissertation was in the field of International Business Legal Studies. Justice Gooneratne took his oaths as an Attorney at Law in October 1978 and joined the Attorney General’s Department on 2 November 1979, as a State Counsel. He held posts of State Counsel (Administration), Senior State Counsel, Deputy State Counsel and Additional State Counsel before becoming a Judge of the Court of Appeal in January 2007.

High Court Judge Lakshman Tikiri Bandara Dehideniya was also sworn in as a Judge of the Court of Appeal before the President.
