SI, wife caught with 100 kg of ganja
View(s):A Sub Inspector (SI) and his young wife were last night taken into custody, along with 100 kg of ganja, at a location in Embilipitiya, police said.
The couple was travelling in their private vehicle with the ganja stashed neatly in 10 gunny bags, when the detection was made near the clock tower situated in the heart of Embilipitiya Town, following a tip-off.
Investigations are continuing to ascertain the degree of the SI’s involvement in the drug trade, including buyers and suppliers, police added.
The couple was produced before a local Magistrate and remanded till Feb.16. Meanwhile, in a separate incident, police were forced to open fire on a key heroin dealer’s vehicle at a location in Hanwella shortly after dusk on Friday.
According to police, the dealer was with his wife and daughter and failed to heed the order to stop. However no one was injured in the shooting, they added.
An unknown quantity of heroin, four forged National Identity Cards and three cell phones were also seized from the suspect. According to the police, the suspect, a resident of Battaramulla, is believed to be the main heroin supplier to dealers in Hanwella, Avissawella and Padukka. (LB)
