An event which shocked me
On January 17, 2015 I came downstairs to find my parents working on my dad’s 1972 Volkswagen Beetle. My mum was in the driver’s seat and the keys were in the keyhole. I thought that my mum wanted me to start the car, so I got in and started it up.
But, lo and behold – the instant I started the engine, the car began speeding down the yard! My dad dived out of the way, just in time. My mum caught the car in the nick of time
and I checked if the handbrake was up – strangely enough, it was! Luckily, no one was hurt but I almost killed my own father! I eventually realized that the car, a manual vehicle, was in first gear at the time.
I felt shaken for several minutes, but
I soon forgot about it. I am glad that no one was hurt.

Humans’ treatment of animals
Man and animals have many characteristics in common. Both eat, drink, sleep and live on earth. But man is selfish. Man does not treat other living beings equally. He thinks that all the other beings are under him. Man destroys the natural environment of animals because of his greed for land. Due to this, animals lose their freedom to roam about.
In certain African countries, Rhinos are under threat due to poaching. People hunt rhinos and kill them. Due to this, the rhino population has decreased. The same problem is also faced by the cat family. Many different species of big cats are facing extinction as poachers have killed them for their skin. In Sri Lanka itself, elephants are hunted for their tusks. To prevent these illegal crimes from taking place, governing bodies have declared these species as endangered.
Humans exploit animals for entertainment. By cutting down forests and destroying habitats, it causes the lessening of animals’ habitats. The main cause for this is because man is a marauder. Man doesn’t give animals the freedom to loiter around. Animals are kept in cages. They do not receive proper care. Often they are beaten. They do not even receive proper meals.
Many world renowned environmental organizations have come forward to implement laws to give animals their due rights. Some have banned the killing of animals.
Man gets everything he needs from the environment and does not give back anything.
He treats animals very badly. Man is a marauder. He must stop it.

Television advertisements – are they useful?
It is indeed very irritating for all of us to see television advertisements being shown every 15 minutes or so, on the screen. It affects the continuity of the programme we are watching. It is a matter of fact that advertisements are useful for salesmen, to commercialize their products. But for us, it is quite disturbing. Some of the goods that are for kids are of high prices and they make children persuade their parents to buy things that they cannot afford.
In my personal view, advertisements are harmful to the language, especially by adding slang terms which children grab on to very fast. In the meantime, advertisers should think of making advertisements in a more socially healthy way.

My favourite cricketer
My favourite cricketer is Mahela Jayawardena. He is a good batsman and a good fielder. He scores runs very fast. His fielding is perfect. He is a right-handed batsman.
The current captain is Angelo Mathews but earlier, Mahela Jayawardena gave the instruction to the team members when he was in the Captain’s position. When he fields, he doesn’t miss any catches. He got his highest score against South Africa. He is a good player who is always with the team and gives help to the other members.
I love him very much.

Habits
Habits good or bad are formed in the same manner, by repetition. The more often we do anything
in a special way, the more likely we go on doing it the same way. At last it becomes a habit.
Habits are important because they form our character. Good habits form a good character, which means success and happiness, but bad habits form a bad character, which means sorrow and failure. So we must see to it that we form only good habits.
Some of the good habits we should be forming when we are young are, telling the truth, doing things at the right time, doing our work thoroughly, obeying parents and teachers and being kind to others.

Looking forward to a new school year
The sound of music filled the air and the scent of all kinds of goodies came wafting up to my nose. Now and then came the bang of a balloon which startled everyone. The culprits sat giggling under a table. All the girls and boys were dancing in the hall. Around them on tables were the snacks and drinks brought for the class party. Everyone was enjoying their utmost on the last day of a whole year at school.
That was almost a month ago and now, it is time to look forward to the new school year of happy surprises, great rewards, scoldings and punishments.
The free and happy month of holidays has ended.
I myself, am impatient for the new year at school to begin. I’ve been waiting all these days to get to know what all those stuff in my new textbooks mean. And the most important one is I’ve been missing my friends terribly. Even those mischievous boys who always annoy me! I’ve also been dying to meet my new class teacher.
With all these, I’m looking forward to a new year at school very soon.

My new class
On January 12, I went to my new class. It was painted light blue. All the furniture in the class too was painted blue. At the entrance I saw ‘Grade 3 – Miss Shashika Gayani.’ She is our new class teacher.
My new classroom is on the first floor. There are fans and a television set in my new classroom. There is an intercom which makes announcements. Forty-eight girls learn in my new class. I was sad on the first day because I did not have any of my old friends in the new class. But soon I made new friends. Some of them are, Ilmi, Sethmi, Senali, Jayani and Thisagi. I still miss my old friends and my Grade 2 class teacher. So I visit them during the interval.
These days we are getting ready for the classroom exhibition. We have to create our own crafts for this exhibition.
I like my new class because I get to learn new things and also because our class teacher is very kind. I hope to learn well and earn praise from my teachers.

What I wish for Sri Lanka in 2015
‘A beautiful country’ is the hope of every Sri Lankan. Everyone likes to live in a peaceful, friendly environment. Adults wish their children to be good citizens to serve their country. As students we always love to be in calm and quiet places too.
Sri Lanka is a country rich with natural beauty. For me, it’s the
most beautiful country in the world and I think it’s the best place for us to grow. As we grow, we learn many new things. We look forward to our nation’s development. In the meantime, the war had finished and we must be thankful to our former president Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa and our heroic soldiers for that great service done to our nation.
Now everyone should gather
to develop our country through
every side. Roads, bridges and public places destroyed by the war should be rebuilt. I hope all children in Sri Lanka will attend schools this year. The government will do their duties and responsibilities to develop our country.
People must work as one without thinking of race and religion. In case of disasters they must help each other. They must love their country. I wish Sri Lanka to be the most successful country in the world.
