Colombo district sees a spike in dengue cases
View(s):Seven thousand dengue cases have been reported in the past one and half months in the Colombo district, with 2089 of them being reported in the past two weeks, according to Health Ministry sources.
The Health Ministry’s Epidemiology Unit said there was an increase in the spread of the disease in January with 1790 cases being reported compared to the 1346 cases in the corresponding period last year.
National Hospital’s Director Dr Anil Jasinghe said two deaths were also reported. The victims had been transferred to the National Hospital from Battaramulla and Homagama.
Colombo’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ruwan Wijemuni said that in Colombo city a majority of the cases were reported from Colombo north and Colombo central.
Dr Wijemuni said gutters, concrete slabs and discarded containers were the prime breeding places of the deadly dengue mosquito.
