Two Sri Lankan gem merchants have been killed while on business in the Republic of Mozambique. The men M.Hissab (52) and M. Shashni (27) from Dinagoda, Beruwala, had gone to Mozambique last Sunday to purchase gems for their business in Beruwala.

The death of the business partners who were known for their generosity has unsettled the entire Beruwala community, said M.Nissam, brother of Mr. Hissab.

He said his brother routinely travelled abroad on business and that no one ever expected that he would face such a tragic end.

M. Saduli, an uncle of the late Shashni said that Shashni chose the gem business after he successfully completed his secondary level education at Zahira College, Colombo.

“This was his second trip to Mozambique and now he has gone forever” Mr. Saduli lamented.

“He was a good sportsman. While in school he played cricket and excelled in other sports and won prizes. He was loved by everybody. When there are festivals in the mosque he always helped the poor.” The final rites of the deceased were conducted in Mozambique and the relatives have been informed.
