The Government of Japan is to grant Rs 28 million for the construction of Udaiyarkaddu School building in the Mullaitivu District, under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP).

The project implementation contract was signed by Ambassador of Japan Nobuhito Hobo and Save the Children International (SCI)- Country Director, William Lynch, on Thursday at the Ambassador’s Residence in Colombo.
Currently, Udaiyarkaddu School accommodates 529 students in a single building consisting of five classrooms for its use, while 13 other classes are held under temporary shelters made of thatched cadjan roofs, galvanized sheet walls and partly cemented floors.
With this grant, SCI will be able to construct a two–storied building with 13 classrooms for the school, which would enable students to study in permanent classrooms with adequate learning facilities.
At the signing of the contract, Ambassador Hobo said that this project will enable parents send their children to school, provide students with decent learning environment and offer them a better future.

“The Japanese government has been offering wide ranging assistance towards reconciliation and rehabilitation of conflict affected regions in Sri Lanka, which includes creation of mine-free environment, boosting Education sector, provision of Livelihood and Income Generation kit for Agriculture and Fishing,” he said.

Mr Lynch said that this grant is a wonderful opportunity to partner with the people and government of Japan to make a real difference in the lives of children for many years to come, and that, they are grateful to work with the Embassy of Japan. (SR)
