Ananda record win over St. Joseph’s after seven decades
Ananda recorded an outright win over St. Joseph’s after a lapse of 77 years when they coasted through to an innings and seven runs win in the Under-19 inter-school cricket encounter ended at Darley Road yesterday.
Ananda’s last win against St. Joseph’s was in 1938 and this is also only the second time that they have achieved an outright win against their opponents. According to sources eventhough they have been playing against each for a long period this is in fact is the 47th encounter between the two schools as the fixture has not been played regularly.
Ananda put themselves in a strong position at the end of the first day. Taking first lease of the wicket and helped by half tons from Nisal Fransisco (91), skipper Sammu Ashan (58) and Nipun Hakgalla (61) they amassed 301 for 9 declared with St. Joseph’s ending the day on 13 for 1.
St. Joseph’s resuming on their overnight score found skipper Sammu Ashan and Dilanka Sandaken too hot to handle and succumbed to a score of 170.
The Josephians made to follow on and left with a task of erasing 131 runs to avoid an innings defeat failed miserably as Sammu along with Shenal Korale shared eight wickets between them and combined to bundle them out for 124.
Royal recorded a moral booster before the Battle of the Blues, when they outclassed Trinity by an innings and 58 runs at Reid Avenue.
The opening day’s play saw Royal helped by half tons from Geeshanth Panditharatne, Naveen Vidanapathirana and Himesh Ramanayake taking first lease of the wicket. They ended the day by making a formidable 307 for 9 at which score they declared.
The writing on the wall was there for the Trinitians after they were bowled out cheaply for a lowly 146 with Lasith Embuldeniya and Harith Samarasinghe doing the damage. Trinity made to follow on fared no better as they put in a pathetic batting performance. Lasith tormented them again and was supported by Randev Pathirana and Harith Samarasinghe as the trio shared nine wickets which wrecked the Trinity batting. Ultimately the Trinitians were bundled out for 105.
A match bag of 10 for 99 by Chanuka Dilshan helped St. Servatius Matara to crush Bandaranayake MV Gampaha by 95 runs at Kadirana.
Bandaranayake MV, in reply to the Servatians score of 301 for 9 declared, resuming on their overnight score of 11 for no loss was ruined by Chanaka who ended with impressive figures of 7 for 34 and were bundled out for 82.
St. Servatius opting to bat the second time made 32 for 2 declared leaving Bandaranayake MV a massive target of 252 runs for victory. Bandaranayake MV in their run chase was nowhere near as they were bowled out for 156.
Mahinda Galle cruised through to an easy seven-wicket win against Revatha MMV Balapitiya in the match concluded at Balapitiya. Mahinda chasing 110 for victory was steered by an unbeaten 67 by Kalhara Jayasekera which helped reach the target with ease. St. Sebastian’s in reply to S. Thomas’s score of 198 resuming on their overnight score of 125 for 4 went on to make 237 to register a first innings win at Moratuwa.
In the other matches that played yesterday De Mazenod, President’s Kotte and Devapathiraja MMV Rathgama gained first innings wins over Mahanama Colombo, Anuradhapura Central and Jaffna Central played at Kandana, Anuradhapura and Jaffna respectively.
Half tons by Hevit Alodian and M. Kajeendran saw St. Patrick’s Jaffna make 319 against St. Anthony’s who ended day one on 56 for 3 at Gampaha while an unbeaten ton by Nipuna Deshan and a half ton by Kushan Akalanka enabled Sri Sumangala Panadura to post a score of 354 for 8 declared against Taxila Central who ended on 63 for 3 in the match played at Horana.

He reached the boundary ten times and went over it once. Skipper Tarusha Weragoda, who has found his form recently, also weighed in with a well compiled 58.
