Colombo, Peradeniya, Moratuwa Varsities figure in world ranked University websites
View(s):Universities of Colombo, Peradeniya and Moratuwa are among the top Lankan universities and Degree-awarding universities/colleges in a world ranking for top university websites.
The ‘Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is an initiative of the cybermetric lab of the Spanish National Research Council, the largest public research body in Spain.
The ranking is conducted taking into account both the volume of the web contents and impact of web publications.
In the world ranking, Colombo University stood at 2135, while Peradeniya was ranked 2,466 and Moratuwa 2,608.
Apart from the main universities, Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (8,118), General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (13,086), Postgraduate Institute of Management (13,495) were the top three Degree-awarding universities/institutes in the rankings for web publications and websites.
The least web-friendly Degree-awarding universities were Buddhasravaka Bhikku University and Hardy University College in Ampara.
Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, Indian Institute of Technology, Bangalore and the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, were the leading education institutions in South Asia.
The Madrid-based research body’s objective is to improve the presence of the academic research institutions on the web and to promote open access publication of scientific results.
The researchers said that academic papers published in high impact international journals play an important role in the ranking of universities.
Total number of web pages hosted in the main web domain and indexed in search engines such as Google and the number of rich files such as pdf, doc, ppt published, can be found in academic search engines such as Google Scholar.
The researchers also reiterated the importance for university authorities to reconsider their web policy and promote the volume and quality of their electronic publications. (NF)
