Parents who helped the Bribery Commission arrest a school principal who demanded a bribe to admit their child to school in the Galle District, were rewarded by the Education Ministry, a senior official said.

Theie reward was that the parents could admit their child to any school of their choice, said Education Ministry Secretary Upali Marasinghe.
The principal of Labuduwa Siridhamma College, Galle, had demanded a bribe of Rs 35,000.

The father of the child had alerted the Bribery Commission, and the principal was arrested while accepting the bribe. The principal has been interdicted pending investigations into the incident.

The Education Ministry, in a bid to encourage parents to lodge more complaints if demands are made for bribes, said that parents can admit their child to any school of their choice.

Accordingly, these parents had requested for a leading school in the Southern province and granted same.

Meanwhile, Mr Marasinghe said that, despite the ministry circular against soliciting money for school admissions, some principals were continuing to solicit funds. (DW)
