Road shows to raise awareness on road safety were discontinued a number of years ago. But with the escalating number of road accidents, the police have decided to ‘hit the roads’ again.

Policemen in fancy dress enacting various road scenes drew curious crowds at the Fort Railway Station on Friday.

A cap with pigtails and a girls’ school uniform transformed one young policeman, while another disguised as an elderly passer-by was dressed in sarong, coat and an umbrella.

Policemen in fancy dress put on a road show to raise awareness on road safety

Police spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekera said more 2,400 persons were killed in road accidents last year and this programme was aimed at reducing the number of fatalities.

At the end of the road show police personnel distributed leaflets on road safety to the crowds which had gathered. The leaflets were given and received with smiles

Let us hope such camaraderie will not be marred in the future by bad motorists or angry policemen.
