Graduates recruited as Development Officers to Pradeshiya Sabha’s and other local government offices, will be trained and recruited into several line ministries, said Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The Prime Minister told Parliament some 52,000 graduates recruited by the former Economic Development Ministry will be guided by the Public Administration Ministry and trained under Ministries such as Housing and Samurdhi, Social Services and Welfare and Children’s Affairs.
In reply to a question raised by United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Parliamentarian Shantha Bandara, the PM said the graduates will not be left unemployed nor deployed to the North.

“Though there is no Economic Development Ministry, we will not abandon the graduates. But as they were recruited erratically and received no training, there is a need to train them,” he said.

Premier Wickremesinghe said that, as a pilot project, State Minister for Children’s Affairs, Rosy Senanayake has agreed to train 500-1000 officers under her Ministry.

“These graduates will receive training in Child Rights and Child Welfare and deployed as Child Rights officers. Most of them want to. We need to train them as most of them have remained in their villages and done nothing for almost two years,” he said.
