View(s):Hundreds of undergraduates from four Faculties of Rajarata University marched from their hostels and staged a protest this week on the main road in front of the University in Mihintale, demanding solutions for the academic and welfare issues that beset them.
The protest was organised by the Students’ union (Maha Shishya Sangamaya).
Students’ union President, Lahiru Weerasekera explained to the media that undergraduates of Rajarata University suffer greatly because the Vice Chancellor and the administration have failed, under the previous government as well as the present government, to address pressing issues of students such as lack of teaching staff and of basic amenities in hostels be immediately met with.
He said that even the Mahapola Scholarship is not given on the due date, adding that, if their demands are not met with immediately, they would resort to harsher measures.
Meanwhile, undergraduates of Sri Jayawardenapura University too staged a protest this week demanding that, the intake of students to universities be increased and additional resources allocated for them.
